As one of the top ten coal industrial bases and an important layout point of the "third line" construction during the "First Five-Year Plan" period, Shizuishan, a resource-based city, promoted the "three major transformations" of industry, people’s livelihood and ecology, and was listed as the first batch of 12 national old industrial cities and resource-based cities’ industrial transformation and upgrading demonstration zones.

Lijiagou Coal Mine in Shitanjing, which was once a place where coal was mined, had 15 coal mines less than 20 kilometers at its peak, some of which were as deep as 100 meters.
In 2017, with the determination of "a strong man broke his wrist", the local government set up the Helan Mountain Cleaning and Renovation Command, launched the Helan Mountain Ecological Management Defence War, eliminated the backward development model of "relying on mountains to eat mountains" in the past, shut down coal mines and carried out ecological restoration projects.
Bai Jianfu, a staff member of the Helan Mountain Cleaning and Renovation Command, told the reporter that the command carried out cleaning and renovation of 49 treatment points in Dawukou District, with a total area of 24.8 million square meters. After the renovation, all the treatment areas were manually intervened, and grass seeds were sown to further accelerate the ecological restoration. In mid-April 2018, 49 cleaning and renovation tasks had fully passed the phased acceptance at the autonomous region level.
In May, 2019, the local organization implemented the comprehensive renovation and restoration of the integrated ecological environment around Helan Mountain Nature Reserve, aiming to shut down and restore all open-pit coal mines and backward coal processing enterprises in Dawukou District. With the closure and withdrawal of open-pit coal mines around Helan Mountain Nature Reserve and the completion of ecological management, the current situation of disorderly coal mining in the local area will be completely changed, and the natural environment of Helan Mountain will gradually recover with the reduction of human activities. After several years, Helan Mountain will restore its original beautiful appearance.

In the desert, behind every touch of green, there is a story.
Miaohu Village, Tao Le Town, Pingluo County, Shizuishan City, Ningxia, is located on the edge of the Mu Us Desert. Here, one side is the edge of the desert and the other side is close to the Yellow River. In 2013, Ningxia Huatai Agricultural Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd. was introduced to the local area, and 5,000 mu of land in Miaohu Village was transferred to grow melons and vegetables in the desert.
In the desert, it is difficult to plant a tree, and it is even more difficult to grow vegetables.
Zhang Zhiming, a researcher at Pingluo County Agricultural Technology Extension Service Center, said that it is very difficult to plant in the desert, such as leaking water and fertilizer in the desert, and it is difficult for vegetation to survive. After continuous exploration, they successfully solved this problem by relying on water-saving irrigation, seedling grafting and other technologies.
In the end, a modern agricultural industrial base has been built here, which integrates seedling breeding of melons and vegetables, introduction and promotion of new varieties, production and management of melons and vegetables, and research and development training of agricultural science and technology.
Tomatoes, melons, peppers, etc. planted in the base are packed and stored in the cold storage after picking, and directly transported to Shenzhen and other places, which is often in short supply. Zhang Zhiming calculated an account, taking small tomatoes as an example, the yield per mu of land ranged from 7,000 kg to 9,000 kg, the picking and purchasing price was 3 yuan/kg, and the income per mu reached 2.1— 27,000 yuan.
Because planting, fertilizing and picking in the production base need a lot of labor, the production base also provides a lot of employment opportunities for local farmers. The total planned irrigation area is 93,500 mu, and it is planned to turn Hedong area into an autonomous regional and national demonstration area for modern agricultural development.

What can happen in one minute?
In Ningxia, in one minute, 86 bottles of wine from the eastern foot of Helan Mountain will be sold all over the world.
The eastern foot of Helan Mountain at 38 north latitude, the sandy soil in Ningxia, the large temperature difference between day and night, abundant sunshine and other climatic reasons have created the quality of high-end wine here, which is also known as the "Bordeaux" producing area in China.
Hedong Manor is the northernmost winery in the eastern foothills of Helan Mountain.
It used to be the farm of Northwest Coal Machinery Factory No.1, where people planted grapes. In 2002, the company was established, which became a comprehensive industry integrating grape planting, processing, sales, leisure and tourism. In 2016, it was selected as a 3A-level tourist attraction.
The journey of tasting wine has also become one of the characteristics of local tourism.
In 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs recommended 150 villages as beautiful leisure villages in China in 2018, and Longquan Village in Dawukou District of Shizuishan City is one of them.
Longquan village, known as "the first village under Helan Mountain", has nine natural springs, which nourish the country streams, and the rural folk museum shows the vicissitudes of farming civilization. Farmers’ new homes are clean and tidy; Pastoral flower sea, greening and beautification have become beautiful new homes that are suitable for industry, tourism and living.
Today’s Shizuishan has already subverted the image of the old "coal city" and replaced it with a more stable and solid green development road.
