Nearly 100 Japanese people held rallies and demonstrations on 17th and 18th to protest the Japan-US summit and the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit in Hiroshima.
From 17th, nearly 100 demonstrators from all over Japan gathered in front of the atomic bombing site in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, holding up banners with the words "Smash the G7 Hiroshima Summit" and placards with the words "Oppose the Japan-US Summit", "Cancel the US military base in Japan" and "The G7 Summit is a war conference". The demonstrators then held demonstrations under the high alert of dozens of police forces, attracting many people along the way.
Miyahara Ryo, the organizer of the event and the director of the "August 6 Hiroshima Action Implementation Committee", said that Japan’s pursuit of "the ability to attack enemy bases" and increase defense expenses is a military intimidation act carried out by the Japanese government in cooperation with the United States. Miyahara introduced that they plan to hold seven rallies and demonstrations from 17th to 21st, calling on more people to join in and jointly issue anti-war voices.
Japanese and American leaders held consultations on strengthening the deterrence of the Japan-US alliance during the talks on the 18th, and decided to further strengthen the tripartite cooperation among the United States, Japan and South Korea.
Affected by the G7 Summit, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was temporarily closed from noon on 18th to 22nd.
