Dialogue "Uncovering Doctors" Zhang Wei: Medical anti-corruption benefits ordinary doctors
"If I can really return to work, I promise that I will cherish it more and devote my efforts to helping and treating patients and become a better doctor." On August 16th, Zhang Yu, a former oncologist in the Third Hospital of Peking University (referred to as "the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University"), was dismissed by the hospital for one and a half years, and posted on his personal social account that he hoped to return to the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University to "return to his old job" as a doctor.
Two years ago, Zhang Yu published a document on the platform to expose the "shady treatment of cancer", which caused widespread concern. Since then, Zhang Yu and the name "Dr. Jiehei" have been closely linked.

On February 25, 2022, the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University made a decision to dismiss Zhang Yu because his "behavior had a bad influence on the reputation of the hospital. The hospital had repeatedly reminded him and still did not stop his misconduct". After leaving the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University, Zhang Yu also had to face many negative voices, including saying that he slandered his peers and questioned his authority. Some people also questioned that he was bent on being a online celebrity "cutting leeks".
On the afternoon of August 17th, Red Star journalists had a dialogue with Zhang Yu.
I hope to return to the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University as a doctor.
Many unknowns remain to be explored.
Red Star News: You recently posted on social media that you want to return to the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University. What is the reason?
Zhang Wei:Recently, the country has made great efforts to rectify medical corruption. I have heard many readers’ voices, and they have commented and left messages under my popular science articles.
I thought it was impossible, but when I saw them, I thought, why not try? I still have a lot of things to do, and I want to be a doctor. There are still many unknown things in the field of tumor research, which can be explored slowly, as simple as that.
Red Star News: At that time, why did you choose to "expose the black" and leave the medical field?
Zhang Wei:I didn’t have such in-depth communication with patients before, but when I had a social media account, many patients told me what had happened and how difficult my family was. I was furious after reading it. My mother and my wife both told me to leave it alone and just do my own thing. I thought about it for three months, but finally I couldn’t help it, so I wrote a letter to expose many bad medical behaviors in the medical industry.
Some doctors have changed the original treatment scheme with better effect and lower cost into an extremely expensive scheme with the highest rebate, so they can earn tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some doctors try their best to instill in patients the concept that "the more money spent on treatment, the better the effect", but this concept is wrong. Drugs that conform to the guidelines, the more money you spend, the better the effect; Those that don’t conform to the guidelines and are nonsense are of course worse.
Red Star News: You have been talking about the guide just now. Can you tell netizens what a medical guide is?
Zhang Wei:Many experts have different opinions on a disease, so we should find the best treatment. A country or an organization organizes the most prestigious and best doctors to identify according to the existing clinical evidence, and selects the most suitable evidence to recognize what is the best treatment for patients in different situations, thus forming a medical guide. The concept of evidence is the result obtained from dozens, hundreds and thousands of normative treatments.
In China, the most important medical guideline (for cancer) is the diagnosis and treatment guideline of CSCO (Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology). As a rule, doctors should analyze the condition and tell patients how many treatments there are, what the guidelines recommend, how much the treatment costs, side effects and so on. But some doctors don’t say that, so they tell patients to use the best scheme for good treatment, and then recommend the worst scheme to patients.
Gradually get out of the pain
"I’m not as brave as I thought, and I’m tired."
Red Star News: After being dismissed from the hospital, how was your life in the past year, and how did your family and yourself suffer?
Zhang Wei:There are many influences. It took me a long time to get rid of it and cheer up slowly. But I still want to do something, in fact, I am quite good now.
Red Star News: You said you wanted to go back to the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University. Did you receive a response from the hospital after you released the news?
Zhang Wei:No response. I don’t know if this will make the hospital accept me. I know the chance is very small, but I want to try. I really want to be a doctor.
The Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University is a very good hospital. Of course, no hospital is perfect, and there will be a small number of bad doctors, but in the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University, such bad doctors are rare. I feel that if even hospitals with good atmosphere can’t accept me, hospitals with poor atmosphere will be even more impossible.

Red Star News: So you actually have deep feelings for the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University?
Zhang Wei:Yes, I have studied and worked there for many years. After I was fired, I would feel heartbroken when I passed the "North Third". I never write bad things about the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University, because feelings are like this.
Red Star News: After leaving the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University, you often do medical science on your personal account. What kind of mentality do you have to do these things?
Zhang Wei:I want to do something useful and really help patients; If you want to write useful articles and correct many people’s ideas, the more expensive the better. You’d better follow the guide.
Guide is the most important way to protect a patient from overtreatment and ensure the quality of medical care. It is also possible to find a solution outside the guidelines, and there are formal and standardized clinical trials, not just casually. We need to have standard procedures and norms to change the guidelines, which can not be decided by a doctor. Only in this way can the interests of patients be guaranteed.
Red Star News: Have you talked to some colleagues about these things after the "uncovering the black" incident?
Zhang Wei:If you watch it online, you will find that many people scold me. Say that my character is poor and my medical skills are poor. More than 95% of them are from my medical colleagues. But there are still some good colleagues who will support me privately and say that you are doing the right thing.
Red Star News: After you left the Third Hospital of Beijing Medical University, you worked as a specialist in a hospital in Zhejiang Province. However, not long after the news of your employment was announced, many people reported you to leave your job. Do you think this is an important reason why you can’t continue to restart your medical career?
Zhang Wei:In fact, I originally wanted to open a clinic, but after discussing with my lover, I felt that I could foresee that I would be attacked. In fact, some private hospitals said they would consider me, but I haven’t decided yet. I’m actually an easy-going person, and I wouldn’t stand up if it weren’t for some doctors who went too far. I’m not as brave as I thought, and I’m scared, too I’m tired, too. I hope I can be accepted again and become a doctor again.
It is suggested to strengthen supervision.
Medical anti-corruption benefits ordinary doctors
Red Star News: From your personal point of view, what are the root causes of some corruption problems in the medical industry?
Zhang Wei:As for the problem of doctors’ over-treatment, I think the first is that the interests are too tempting, and the second is that the supervision needs to be strengthened.
Red Star News: What suggestions do you have for some problems in the current medical industry?
Zhang Wei:For example, if you want to use a new scheme for patients, you have to apply for approval, even if you change the guide correctly, you have to apply for approval and get the approval of your peers. You can’t just slap a doctor on the forehead and spend whatever money you earn. Need to increase restrictions, after all, as long as interests are involved, some people may choose to lie. I hope the doctor can tell the patient the true information sincerely. I encourage patients to resist after being deceived, and at least call a complaint phone to give a negative feedback.
Red Star News: What do friends around you who are still practicing medicine think about the current anti-corruption in the medical industry?
Zhang Wei:Different people are different. Doctors with a clear conscience benefit. They are very happy. In addition, there are many operations that can be done or not, and the workload is obviously reduced without meaningless operations. In the future, anti-corruption in the medical industry will certainly be beneficial to ordinary doctors, avoiding waste and saving money, which is a positive feedback. Reduce unnecessary waste in medical treatment, save money, and then feed it back to medical staff, and the normal income of the medical industry will gradually increase, which is the best situation.
